On 26 Aug 2026 (~02:55 GMT / 08:25–08:30 NST), a catastrophic flood struck the Bhotekoshi–Trishuli river system on the Nepal–China border, likely from a massive ice-rock avalanche off Langtang-Lirung's north flank into the Lhende Khola. Evidence suggests not a classic GLOF but glacial mass wasting triggering a flash flood, with flood heights over 100 m in places. The debris surge caused 7,000+ deaths/missing and vast infrastructure damage in both countries (UNDP) — the worst glacier-collapse disaster recorded in the Himalayas.
